Iona Harrison's story is a testament to the transformative power of sports and the impact of inclusive initiatives. This international hockey player's journey began with a sense of exclusion in school football trials, but her encounter with Power Through Sport changed everything.
The Power of Alternative Sports
Power Through Sport's mission is to provide young people with access to "alternative and minority sports" that often go unnoticed in the UK. For Harrison, it was roller-skating hockey that captured her heart. She found a community where she belonged, a stark contrast to her experiences in school football.
"Iona's story is a perfect example of how these niche sports can be a lifeline for young people who feel excluded from mainstream sports," says Johnny Tulip, Managing Director of Power Through Sport.
A Global Stage
From roller-skating to ball hockey, Harrison's journey took her to the Ball Hockey World Championship in the Czech Republic. The experience was surreal, with a big arena, screens, and crowds. Despite the lack of home support, it was a moment she never thought possible.
"The whole experience was insane... it's something I thought I'd never do," Harrison reflects.
Impact and Growth
Harrison's involvement with Power Through Sport has not only shaped her athletic career but also her personal growth. As a full-time hockey coach, she credits the organization with boosting her confidence and providing her with a unique understanding of the youth she works with.
"My confidence has grown ridiculously... I've got an understanding of being their age and growing up in this community," she says.
Reaching Underserved Communities
Power Through Sport's impact extends beyond individual success stories. The organization targets low-income and underserved communities, aiming to combat health issues like obesity and alcohol misuse. Tulip emphasizes that these sports often thrive in the periphery, providing an outlet and a sense of community for young people who might otherwise be left behind.
"Young people who haven't been given a lot in life are the ones who grab it with two hands... they're the ones it has the most profound impact on," Tulip adds.
A Broader Perspective
Harrison's journey highlights the importance of providing diverse sporting opportunities. It's not just about finding one's passion; it's about building confidence, fostering community, and addressing health inequalities. Power Through Sport's work is a reminder that sometimes, the most impactful initiatives are those that operate on the fringes, offering a different path for those who need it most.
In my opinion, stories like Harrison's should inspire us to rethink our approach to sports and community engagement. It's time to shine a light on these alternative sports and the organizations that make them accessible.
