The Brisbane Metro, a 'tram-like' service, has been a game-changer for the city's public transport system, especially on weekends. Since its introduction in January 2025, the M2 Metro line has seen a 161% surge in trips on Fridays and Saturdays from 7 pm to midnight, compared to the previous 13 months. This significant increase in usage is attributed to the affordable 50-cent fares, which began as a trial in August 2024. The Metro's launch in October 2024, followed by its temporary suspension and eventual re-launch, has been a rollercoaster, but the current iteration seems to be hitting the right notes.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner attributes the success to the Metro's affordability and its 'tram-like' appeal, backed by international research. Schrinner's personal experience, catching the Metro with his son on a public holiday, highlights the service's reliability and frequency, which is a stark contrast to past years when public transport usage would drop significantly on such occasions. The Metro's trunk service model, where passengers might ride it to a destination and then use an Uber for the remaining journey, is also proving popular.
The 425 route, connecting Kenmore Village to the CBD, has seen a 37% increase in weekend patronage, further emphasizing the shift towards public transport. QPAC executive director Rachel Healy advocates for the convenience of using public transport, especially in a city like Brisbane, where the central area is congested with cars. The Metro's expansion plans, including 22 new stations and stops, are on the horizon, but federal funding is crucial for its realization.
However, the journey towards a fully expanded Metro has not been without challenges. The council opposition leader, Jared Cassidy, points out delays in the business case progress, highlighting the need for federal government contributions. The Metro's future, with its potential to revolutionize Brisbane's public transport, remains a topic of interest and debate, as the city continues to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of its residents.
